| Women can't lift heavy weights |
[Feb. 26th, 2007|07:46 pm] |
I didn't expect to be offended when I went shopping for food at the Westmount Metro. (I'm in Montreal, madly re-working features for a demo tomorrow night.)
"Recherche Caissieres / Emballeurs" Wanted: Female cashiers, Male baggers* (* Yes, French is gendered)
Excuse me? I ask the cashier, and call to speak to a manager... same story: "women can't lift the weights up to 100 pounds, but men can be cashiers if they want"
Isn't that illegal? Last I checked, a business had to specify that a position required heavy lifting, but they could not discriminate based on gender. Or maybe Quebec's distinct society has a regressive, anti-woman provision on the books for discriminatory hiring practices.
Somehow, I really doubt it. I'm blaming it on backwards management at this specific store.
Can anyone comment on the legal aspect? |

| On Children, Porn and Technology |
[Feb. 21st, 2007|08:04 pm] |
This entry does not contain any links to sites that aren't safe for work.
There are a couple cases of late that have reinforced my belief that courts are clueless and existing laws horrible. These are US cases, and I'd like to be shown that our Canadian courts are a bit smarter. Expect similar cases here in the near future.
First, consider the plight of Julie Amero. A substitute teacher facing 40 years in prison for the crime of exposing minors to porn. The porn pop-ups the children were exposed to were the result of poor security practices on the part of the school, but she's the one being sacrificed. There's a campaign underway to help her raise funds for her defense, and write letters to officials.
Finally, consider the case of two teens being charged for producing child porn. There's some great comments there, so I'll add only one thing. If we allow "children" to have sex, why is it ok to invade their privacy? Who found out about the email and how?
All right, I must go back to work... I've got a demo to polish off! |

| Sulfur and molasses: that was stupid |
[Mar. 18th, 2006|04:29 am] |
Things that used to be considered normal:
-hitting kids on the back when they are vomitting (or choking on food) -burdock root with sulfur and molasses for "spring cleansing" -kerosene, sulfur and molasses as a strep throat remedy -killing a chipped tooth with a grain of lye
Fifty years ago, the last three were still common. Ok, maybe the last one was only once in a remote village.( what stupid things will we look back on in horror? ) |
